Naloxbox Hendricks CountyHendricks County Naloxbox Program

On Friday, November 19th, 2021, the Indiana Naloxbox Program will be coming to 3 cities in Hendricks County. This program aims to reduce our rising number of deaths from opioid overdose by providing publicly accessible opioid-reversal medication to the county. This medication is commonly referred to as 'Naloxone' or 'Narcan'. In 2020, Hendricks County was ranked 11th amongst all 92 counties in Indiana for the highest number of opioid overdose deaths and suffered its highest number of opioid-related deaths since 2017. The county also experienced approximately 533 unique instances in which naloxone was administered by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone is a safe and effective medication for preventing opioid overdose deaths in cases of opioid overdose and is often the difference between a patient living and dying. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist and works by attaching itself to opioid receptors and effectively reversing and blocking the effects of opioids. Naloxone has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system, and it is not a treatment for opioid use disorder.

If you or a loved one are struggling with opioid addiction, help prevent potential overdose by getting your own Naloxone overdose-reversal medication kit at one of three locations below.

 What are Naloxboxes?

Naloxboxes are a hard acrylic box mounted to the exterior wall of a building that provides 24/7 access to readily-accessible doses of nasal-spray naloxone—an effective opioid reversal medication, steps on how to administer the medication, and local referrals for substance use treatment.  The use of the Naloxboxes will be completely confidential and free to access. All Naloxboxes will be regularly restocked to provide Naloxone to all who need it. See Picture Below:

Naloxone FAQ

  • What is naloxone and how does it work?
Naloxone (naloxone HCL, Narcan®, Evzio®) is an FDA-approved medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose by blocking receptors in the brain and restoring breathing.
  • What are the signs of an opioid overdose?
Signs may include unresponsiveness, slow or shallow breathing, pinpoint (constricted) pupils, blue
fingernails or lips, vomiting, or gurgling noises.
  • What are the side effects of naloxone?
Naloxone is a generally safe medication, but may cause some individuals to experience withdrawal.
Symptoms of withdrawal include confusion, sweating, vomiting, and irritability. Rarely do individuals
    become combative.
  • Can someone overdose on naloxone if given too much?
No. However, if the individual is dependent on opioids, they may experience increased withdrawal
symptoms with repeated doses of naloxone.
  • Is there anyone that naloxone should not be given to?
Naloxone should not be given to anyone with an allergy or sensitivity to naloxone hydrochloride. When necessary, naloxone may be used in pregnant women at the lowest possible dose to prevent fetal distress. Contact your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns.
  • Is naloxone addictive?
No, naloxone is non-addictive and has no potential for abuse.
  • I’ve heard a lot about fentanyl. Is naloxone effective against it?
Yes. In some cases, fentanyl may be so potent that multiple doses of naloxone are required.
