Property Tax Responsibilities

The Auditor’s office staff works closely with the Assessor and Treasurer’s office to complete these processes.  Segregation of our duties is determined by law and designed for transparency and fairness.  
Among the duties and responsibilities are the following:
·         File all property tax deductions, including Homestead, Veteran’s, Blind & Disabled, Geothermal and Over Age 65
·         Calculate all property tax statements for real & personal property, and mobile homes
·         Correct errors on property tax statements
·         Administer tax abatements & Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) Areas
·         Distribute semi-annual settlement of all property taxes to the appropriate taxing units
·         Maintain ownership records for real estate within the county, including transfers, splits, combines, and annexations
·         Hold annual Tax Sale in conjunction with the Treasurer

Financial Responsibilities

The Auditor’s staff and Treasurer’s office maintain separate accounting records to ensure proper use of public funds.  All claims for payment are approved by the County Commissioners, while the County Council authorizes the amount of money that can be spent by each department.  
Among the duties and responsibilities are the following:
·         Distribute payroll for County employees
·         Maintain fund & drain maintenance ledgers
·         Audit & process claims submitted by County departments as well as receipt in County revenue
·         Keep official minutes, ordinances, contracts, and bonds
·         Administer & report County grants
